Looks like we have a lead on a 3 bedroom townhome in Upland. The owner has taken beautiful care of the property, and it's pretty darn quiet. Plus it has a walk-in closet! Whee! Even better, she can't move for another 30-60 days, so that means we can give plenty of notice to our current landlords!
I'm filling out the application now, think good thoughts for us!
Oh, and as a sidenote, I think I bit into a garlic-flavored jellybean. Gross. | | Friday, August 8th, 2008 | | 4:27 pm |
So, Kate and I been dealing with a rather thorny issue lately: housing.
We love our place, but it's so insufferably hot, there's no central air (it's SoCal, WTF?), we have a highly belligerent neighbor, and the road noise (i.e. buses, drag racers, firetrucks, and ambulances) drives me crazy. Plus, since we'll both be working on our dissertations at roughly the same time, having separate offices has become something of a priority.
So, we're thinking of moving to Alta Loma, which is only 9 miles from school/work. We've found a backhouse that's in our price range, and it has 2 levels, 3 bedrooms (actually, 1 bedroom and 2 offices), and is in a residential/suburban area. Hopefully we'll get to look at it sometime this week,
Wish us luck, this might be an adventurous few weeks!!! | | Saturday, June 28th, 2008 | | 9:58 am |
Diablo 3! The teaser for Diablo 3 came out recently. Looks like they've made some good improvements. I hope it's not a wholly MMORPG, b/c I don't have the time/money to buy that service...but I'd love to play the solo adventures! Commence drooling. http://www.blizzard.com/us/splash.html | | Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 | | 2:51 pm |
I'm tired of the gas prices.
I want to get a scooter or moped.

I think I'm burned out on all of my projects.
Seriously.
I can't find the motivation to do any of my work.
Today's a wash.
Tomorrow will be better. | | Thursday, May 29th, 2008 | | 8:35 pm |

First off, the movie "Kinky Boots" was hilarious! Kate and I really enjoyed watching it, even though we went in undecided if it'd be good or not.
Second, operation "Finda Kitteh" was a complete success. Said cat is now hanging out behind the fridge. I don't know why, but figure it's a "cat thing." This kitteh absolutely loves Kate. That's a good thing. Hopefully not more than it likes me.
Pictures will follow. | | Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 | | 9:58 pm |
Wow, I'm fried.
My project went live this week, and I've started collecting data. Only 10 responses so far, but I have great hopes!
New mantra for the evening: I will not check the survey until 9 AM tomorrow. | | Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 | | 11:10 am |
My IRB application finally came back! This means I can contact all my participating sites and give them the invitation letters to hand out to their students!!! Yaay! Hurrah for data that may develop into a dissertation...or lead to a dissertation! On another note, after spending the weekend in San Diego with her brother and sister in law, Kate has decided that she's ready to look into getting a kitty!!! I know nothing about kitties, except that they're soft, fuzzy, and cuddly. Anyone want to share some insights, advice, etc? Current Mood: excited | | Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 | | 1:54 pm |
For the record, I've spent 6 hours today looking for a book that probably doesn't exist anymore. It's definitely a bad sign when the publisher says they've never heard of it, the authors don't have any more copies, my professional organization doesn't have a copy, and no library in the United States has a copy.
And I really want it for my research.
And it's a piece of my profession's collective history.

Why, yes, I am watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy today.

Piss off Microsoft, Vista has infuriated me for the last time. I'm making the switch.
Bye-bye.
Hello, Leopard, I'm sure we'll get along fine. | | Saturday, February 9th, 2008 | | 9:35 am |

It's been a while since I last posted. The short of it is that I've been working a lot. I finished a manuscript that I hope to send for review soon, and am taking preparatory steps towards relaunching the study with a few really cool modifications. I'm hoping to have the survey online tomorrow, and then I can send out my recruitment emails. I'm targeting 23 colleges and universities across the nation, but will be happy if I only get 10. Anticipated level of student participation? 700+. Pretty cool. Multiple baseline comparisons? Nifty. Learning how to describe evaluation to undergradaute students? Priceless.
I'm also doing an in-depth analysis of graduate education in evaluation. So far I've examined 89 schools, but I have the feeling that there's more to go. It's interesting work, and is a pretty clear indication of where the field is.
I'm working on dissertation ideas, but realize that I'll probably never get to do my idea study. Too much money, too much programming, too much that's just unknown. Perhaps a piece of it will get worked into a dissertation, or maybe I'll do something totally different. Time will tell.
I'm dealing with a huge desire to ditch my Dell and Windows-Based computers and transition into a Mac. It's just a shame the price is so high. But, with the new ones, you can run both Leopard and Windows XP simultaneously. That's good, since most of my stats programs don't come in a Mac version.
Non-research work is going well. I'm still the Jobs Coordinator for my school, and I maintain that I have one of the most interesting jobs on campus. The Pitzer project is developing nicely, and TA-ing is still a lot of fun. Classroom dynamics are always so interesting. This is a good group of students, and seem interested/willing to learn.
Am hoping to get some time off so I can co snowboarding this year. There's still a bit of snow in the mountains, but it'll likely be gone in a week. Nothing like my first year out here where it rained constantly and there was a ton of snow. *sigh* | | Wednesday, November 7th, 2007 | | 10:20 am |
Stress, when mixed with beer and melatonin tablets, can make you dream some crazy things. I dreamed I was asked by the Dean of my department to give a 30 minute speech at the American Evaluation Conference...with only 5 minutes to prepare.
I startled awake at 2 AM rather shaken up.
Falling back asleep, I dreamed I was in a pub having a round with my idols...but they were all 26-34! Strangely, they were dressed fashionably from when *they* were 26-34. You should have seen the hair. Chatting with them was just plain fun.
I woke up at 7 feeling rested.
Strange. | | Sunday, November 4th, 2007 | | 9:34 am |
Plans for the day:
1) Finalize slides for AEA "Undergraduate Interest in Evaluation" presentation 2) Proofread jobs speech for "New Evaluators" business meeting. 3) Develop handouts for jobs speech 4) Lunch at Pho Ha 5) Laundry 6) Pack for trip to Baltimore 7) Revise paper to send to American Journal of Evaluation 8) Write presentation proposal for WPA 9) Review documents for Pitzer evaluation project | | Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 | | 8:58 am |
I need to find a costume for tonight in case I have the energy to be social.
I figured I'd go as an emo kid.
Gonna have to hit up a goodwill this afternoon for the clothes, and then go to target to buy a black witch wig and then give it an unkempt haircut. And I'm sure Kate has some black eyeliner I can borrow.
Should be fun. :-) | | Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 | | 3:05 pm |
Obligatory Monthly Update Let's see, it's been awhile since I updated this. The good news is that my leg is finally healed and I've been back on the bike for about 2 weeks now. I'm still going easy on the hard climbs since I don't want to damage the cell matrix as it heals beneath the skin, but I've done a few 30-mile rides and one thing is certain: this feels good.
I've been working like a maniac on projects and papers. I'm hoping to submit a manuscript in the next few weeks to a major evaluation journal, and have been preparing a presentation on the same topic. Speaking of that, I have 2 talks at AEA this year. If you're in Baltimore you should come listen. I'll be speaking on the recruitment of undergraduates into evaluation (an empirical study, thank you very much) and giving an invited speech on seeking jobs in evaluation. Both will go well, though I'm starting to feel the stress.
I've started working on another major project with my adviser. I'm not going to give it away, but I expect it to cause a few ripples in the professional field. Even the preliminary results are quite interesting. It's amazing what you can do with existing data. :-)
I've also been asked to do a pretty substantial project for Pitzer college. It looks interesting, pays alright for I'll be asked to do, and will count towards my doctoral portfolio. Speaking of that, I should have 3 major projects to add to that by the end of the school year. Yeah! If all goes well, I might be able to take my qualifying exams next fall.
I'm also thinking about dissertation topics. I want mine to be a major contribution to the field, not one of those "my adviser has a project already, I think I'll just take a piece of that and make it into my dissertation." People like that really aggravate me. Grow.The.Heck.UP! You have to learn to do your own projects at some time, and the dissertation is a great time to do it. Anyway, nothing finalized yet, but it'll be around training and development. Hmmm.... |
